Rachael,
Just to clear up the post stating that our J.P. Parker is the John Parker born in 1849 in Illinois and the son of Issac and Sarah Parker: that John Parker is not our John P. Parker, born in 1846 in Illinois. Our only source for our J.P. Parker being born in Mt Sterling is assumption he is enlisted in the Union Army in Mt Sterling.
The John Parker who enlisted in Mt Sterling (Mt Shiling?) in 1867 was 21 years old when he enlisted. He was discharged in 1870 and would have been 24 years old. Issac’s son John Parker was only 21 years old in 1870 and still living with his parents and six brothers and sisters in Mt. Sterling in June 1870.
According to the Register of Enlistments in the US Army, 1798-1914, #M233, Page 16, Roll 34, 1867, P-Z: John Parker, Born Mt Shiling (sp?), Ill, age 21, Farmer, Brown eyes, Dark Hair, Ruddy Complexion, 5'11 3/4", 32Inf, Co. G, 21 Inf, Co G., Discharged Jun 1870, for expiration of service at Camp McDowell (McPowell?). This record is very hard to read, units and place names could be wrong. The units and location at Camp McDowell would have had John Parker fighting Apaches in Arizona. He would have been at Camp McDowell in June 1870. While possible, it is not realistic to have him back home in Mt. Sterling in time for the 15 June 1870 Census.
John P. Parker's enlistment in the Union Army tracks with my Uncle Buck (William Clifford Parker, b. 1914 – d. 2000) being adamant that his Grandfather had served in two Armies and for a total of seven years. John P. Parker would have joined the Confederate Army in 1863 when he was about 17 years old. This would give him three years of service in the Confederate Army and then four years’ service in the Union Army out west in the Indian Wars. It was a standard practice for the Union Army to allow Confederate soldiers to enlist and send to patrol the west. John P. Parker self-identifies as serving in the Confederate Army in the 1910 Federal Census.
Cheers
Crawford Co. Illinois is on the eastern side of Illinois. Brown County is on the far western side of the State of Illinois and slightly north. If you wish to compare maps, go to Wikipedia and enter one location, check the map. Then do the same for the other location, and you can mentally compare their respective distances. Wikipedia is free.

Hello, Rachael Hagemaster - I think your ancestors are found in detailed censuses from 1850 and later in a part of Brown Co., Illinois originally listed as Precinct 3 and Precinct 4, In 1860 and forward, the communitiy was called Missouri, later Mount Sterling. It appears that the John Parker of your post was born 1849 Illinois, lived in 1850 in Pct. 4 of Brown County, Illinois. He was a son of Isaac Parker and wife Sarah Unknown. Isaac, b. 1821 was a son of Alexander Parker.
A patriarch of your line was Alexander Parker, botn 1793 Virginia who was first married to Sarah Unknown. After her death, Alexander Parker m 2). Elizabeth Unknown. Both wives gave him many sons and daughters, and they all stayed close, in adjoining precincts, only a number of farms apart. Another elder of the clan was John Parker who was born 1800 North Carolina and may have been a brother of Alexander. Unclear.
Check Ancestry.com where you will find their very large families listed.
I hope these are the people you seek. Good luck in your resarch.
