Monmouth County, NJ Parkers

I also am new at this and trying to find some info on my Parker heritage.  So far I have been able to find out that my line is from Monmouth County, NJ.  There appears to be a lot of them but I am dead ended at my Great Great Grandfather Jacob H. Parker (1831-1895), married to Deborah Burge Parker (1821-1887).  Jacob was born in a town with the lyrical name of Squankum, NJ.  At least one of his children, my Great Grandfather, William E. Parker, was born (1858) in Lower Squankum, NJ.  It looks as though Jacob and Deborah were married and spent their entire lives in Monmouth County.  Jacob's parents may have been John P. and Ann Britton Parker.  I any of this sounds familiar to anyone, I would sure like to hear from you.  If there is a NJ Group, I would like to hear from you as well.  Thanks,  Jim Parker

  • Hi Jim— Looks like you must be some sort of cousin of mine, because William E. Parker (b. 1858 in Lower Squankum) was my GGG-grandfather. From William, I'm descended through his daughter Flora Crooks Parker (1880-1902) who m. an Irish immigrant named John James Clements. Let me know if you're still checking your messages here and are interested in comparing family history notes. Cheers, Kevin
  • John P. Parker and Ann Britton Parker's third child and second son was a Jacob Parker.  Jacob was born May 10th in 1832.  If you know your Jacob's birth date and it matches, that would certainly be a clue to his parentage.

  • may have cracked a wall with David Parker b.1736  leaves two unnamed minor boys

    • James,  what is the "P" group # of your sample,  Mine is P261  http://web.utk.edu/~corn/parkerdna/park5.htm

      • Not assigned yet, just got the results and matched everything up myself with Group5 and a DYS search. Have you ever heard of a connection to famous lawyer -James or Samuel Alexander and New Jersey Parkers Elisha, James or two orphan/minor sons of David? A widow of James Parker b?d.1738 ended up marrying a Samuel Alexander and there is something more than one will about minor parker sons. This is one source:

        • ID: I1275
        • Name: Marey Grant
        • Sex: F
        • Note:
          SOURCE NOTES:
Marey, the daughter of David aud Martha (Allen) Grant, was probably born
about 1714. She married first James Parker who died in 1738 in Cumberland
County. Her brother, John Grant, of Somerset County, is named as one of
the sureties of Mary Parker, administratrix of the estate of James Parker
on November 11, 1738. The will of her father, David Grant, probated in
1743, mentions her five children, Jeannet, Martha, Margret, David, and
Marey Parker. The widow, Mary Grant Parker, married Samuel Alexander, who
died in 1777, a resident of Bernards Town-ship. His will mentions his
deceased "Son-in-law" (stepson) David Parker, his "daughters-in-law"
(step-daughters) Jane Blackford, Margrete Walker, and Mary Price, two
minor sons of David Parker. and the testator's own sons, William and
Sanitiel, aud daughters. Elizal)etll atid Sarah. Finally the death of
Marey (Grant) Parker Alexander is evidenced in her will, probated July
31, 1784, where as widow of Samuel Alex-ander, she mentions her three
daughters, Jane Blackford, Mar-gret Walker, and Mary Price, mentioned in
Samuel Alexander's will in 1777, her son, Samuel Alexander, her daughter,
Elizabeth Morris, and her daughter, Sarah Giles, whose hus-band, Levi
Giles, is named as one of the executors. This probably means that of the
five Parker children named in the grandfather, David Grant's will,
Jeannet had become Jane and had married Nehemiah Blackford, Martha had
probably died unmarried, Margrete had married Hugh Walker, David had
married and had predeceased his mother, leaving two minor sons mentioned
but unnamed in Samuel Alexander's will in 1777, but not mentioned in
Marey (Grant) Parker Alexan-der's will in 1784, and Marey had become
Mary, the wife of Josiah Price. By her second marriage, with Samuel
Alexander, Marey (Graut) Parker Alexander had born, William, alive in
1777 but unmentioned in 1784, Samuel, Elizabeth, unmarried in 1777 but
Elizabeth Morris in 1784, and Sarah, unmarried in 1777, but the wife of
          Levi Giles 1784.

        • my head hurts...some one else read this FOR PLAUSIBILITY: Elder John and/or James m.Anna Doty cousins or brothers ?

  • Jim, my dna only confirms a connection to Robert Parker b.1630s lived in Barnstable MA brother/son Elisha in Perth Amboy and appears to spread up into Pennsylvania. The test also gave me more names and some in NewJersey, but none were Jacob or William.

    I'll keep looking,

    James

    • Thanks.  So far I have had a few leads in MA but they do not seem to be related.  If it is not too much trouble, since I am such a rookie, can you tell me a little about DNA testing and group numbers?  They sound promising.  Also, I should have mentioned in my last message that I have not come across any other James'.    Jim

      • Family Tree DNA was recommended by Parker Family yDNA project administrator, Dennis West.
My curiosity is peaking with a discovery of two minor/orphan sons of David Parker who died before 1777 will noting his unnamed sons. My hunch is at least one is either Elder John or our James. I'll keep an eye out for new "Mount"s.

  • I'm anxiously awaiting final yDNA to confirm the New Jersey connection of my 4ggf James Parker b.1750-2 d. 1835 m. 1780 Anna Doty b.1765 New Jersey Dotys from Mayflower Edward Doty. What more can you share concerning John P. -An Britton Parker etc..
