Some Box Family connections to FG#7

I am posting this info about the Box family.

Wayne

1. ROBERT1 BOX was born Abt. 1707, and died Bef. 1786. He married PHILLIS.

Notes for ROBERT BOX:

Thanks To Joseph Fox for sharing his Box research with me.(W.N.P) NOTE: See more info that I have listed under Robert Box wife Phillis. WNP

Wayne, As a result of attempting to correct an incorrect statement of my role in the research of the Robert Box family, I pulled together some of the documentation that supports my perspective of Robert and Phillis Box as the ancestors of most of the Box family of South Carolina.  Since you have already accepted a portion of it, here is a condensed view of our documentation.  Use it if you wish.  I will be happy to furnish other documentation if I have it.

Josiah Box was the son of Michael Box who married Mary Keys Bolton (daughter of Joseph Keys and widow of William Bolton). Michael and Mary Box lived beside his mother, Margaret Box, widow of Joseph Box, on Walnut Branch in Laurens Co. SC until they moved to GA and participated in the GA land lotteries and eventually settled in Banks Co. GA. Their sons, Josiah (who died in MS), Marmaduke (who died in TX), claimed land patents in Fayette Co. AL and Michael Jr. moved to Rhea Co. TN and died in TN.

I placed a post-em on your "Parker and Allied Families". I appreciate very much the documentation you provided. If you are interested, I will be happy to provide the documentation for statements in my post-em.

The only error I see in your presentation is the father of Josiah Box. Verna's post removed Josiah as a son of Robert Box. At the time of her post, we had not worked out his parentage but later found the "Bio of Joseph Keys and Family", the probate proceedings of the estate of William Bolton, the land records of Michael Box,Sr. in SC and GA and the records of his sons as they moved westward. My hypothesis of the ancestors of Josiah Box is:

http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.box/1501.4.1.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx

There has been much confusion on Josiah Box--his ancestors and descendants. Verna Stone did much to clear up his descendants but evidently did not have the energy to post her findings on his ancestors.

Dave, Here is my current hypothesis of the Box family, based on the documentation found in land records on South Carolina Archives on-line and the Memorials behind those records and on the court records found in various states. It is quite different from most family trees based on Wades' The Box Book. The documentation is the result of many genealogists’ research. Please keep in mind it is an hypothesis and is subject to change. I post it in anticipation that other Box genealogists will make additions or corrections. I also believe it will play a role in interpreting the yDNA profiles.

Robert Box, b. abt. 1707, and his wife, Phillis, are found in Delaware in 1728-29; in Virginia in 1753-55; in South Carolina about 1762-75; in the area that became Washington Co., NC from about 1775-1785, and back in South Carolina in 1786. Robert Box, the elder, first lived on Jackson Creek in Fairfield Co., SC and later on Reedy River in Laurens Co. SC. The deed by which he sold the Jackson Creek tract in 1769 was witnessed by Robert Box, Jr.

Their family would be Joseph Box, b. before 1730, who married Margaret; John Box, b. before 1744, who married Rachel; Robert Box, Jr., b. 1734, who married a daughter of James Williams; Edward Box, b. before 1750, who married (1) Lydia, then (2) Nancy; and Henry Box, b. before 1760. It is very likely that all of the men and their families were in Washington Co. NC during the Revolutionary War with the exception of Edward Box, b. 1754, who married Elizabeth Newton and served in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. This second Edward Box is thought to be the son of Robert Box, b. 1734.

Joseph and Margaret Box were probably parents of Michael Box who married the widow, Mary Keys Bolton, Joseph Box, (Jr.) who married Mary and Jonathan Box. Joseph Box lived on Walnut Creek in Laurens Co., SC.

John and Rachel Box were parents of John Box, Jr. (deceased by 1815) Shadrack Box, Robert Box, Abraham Box and Benjamin Box. Their daughters were Molly Box South, Rachel Box Banks, Jemima Box Sneed and an unknown daughter who married a Williamson. John Box lived first on Little River in Newberry Co. and then on Reedy River in Laurens Co. He sold land on Reedy River that had been granted to Robert Box, the elder, and was named in court as a brother of Henry Box.

Robert Box, Jr., b. 1734, was the son-in-law of James and Hester Williams and most genealogists have his wife as Mary but IF he was the Robert Box Sr. of Pendleton Co. in 1790 that is not likely. His sons were probably Edward Box, b. 1754, Stephen F. Box, John Morris Box, and Robert Box Jr. (of the 1790 census). He had at least one daughter, Ava Rilla Box Matthews. James Box, Henry Box, Jacob Box, and Wiseman Box who were associated with Edward Box, born 1754, in deeds and location were either sons or nephews of Robert Box, Jr. Robert Box, b. 1734, lived on Raborns Creek in Laurens Co. SC and later on Tugaloo River in Pendleton Co., SC as Robert Box, Sr. in the 1790 Census.

Edward Box, born before 1750, and his wives (1)Lydia and (2) Nancy had possibly a son, William, and three daughters, Rebecca Box Weatherford, Margeret Peggy Box Keele and Elizabeth Box Morris. Edward Box lived first on Raborns Creek in Laurens Co. SC and later in Pendleton Co., SC.

Henry Box's family is unknown. In the Census of 1790 Burke Co. NC, it appears he has 3 sons and 3 daughters. In the Census of 1800 Laurens Co., SC, he appears to be one of the two Henry Boxes living on Raborns Creek.

There are Box men (and women) who do not currently fit into this family hypothesis:

The Samuel Box, b. 1745, in Orange District SC, is not found in SC documentation except in the pension application he made many years later in TN. He apparently lived in SC from 1745 until after the Revolutionary War without leaving tracks. The fact he lived that long without a land grant suggests he was an urban Box living in the flat lands amongst the large plantations and his relationship to the hill country Box families is unknown.

Thomas Box and a different Samuel Box had land on the Neuse River NC about 1757 and Thomas Box later moved into the general area of South Carolina where Samuel Box lived previously.

There was a Jacob Box who had a land grant on Wateree Creek, probably in Fairfield Co., SC in 1753 but does not appear to carry through the procurement process of Memorial indicating he died or moved. The land record indicated he had at least one child. There was a Robert Box who was killed in SC in 1782 and a Mrs. Mary Box, widow of a Robert Box, that collected on a Revolutionary Indent of a Robert Box in 1785. These are events that may or may not be related.

Since your yDNA links you to the descendants of Robert Box, Sr. of Pendleton Co., you are very likely descended from one of the Box men who lived in Washington Co. NC during the Revolutionary War. The most likely loose ends that could be your lines are the unknown sons of Henry Box and possibly the Robert Box who was the son of John and Rachel Box. He was probably the Robert Box who passed through Claiborne Co. TN to Illinois and maybe Iowa.

Please keep in mind that although this is based on a lot of documentation, the interpretations that connect that documentation could be (and probably some of it is) in error. It is hoped that patterns that become apparent in the yDNA profiles from descendants with a paper trail will clarify the Box family relationships.

Julie, Thanks for your reply.  It makes me feel a lot better.  Verna Woods Stone was the person who documented the family of Josiah and Milly Box :
    http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.box/1452.3/mb.ashx
Verna and I were very close cooperators in Box genealogy because in the beginning we were both listed by Ophelia Wade in her book as descendants of Josiah Box.  Our cooperative research discovered that was in error.  I am descended from Keziah who was a daughter of Robert Box and his wife, Patsy Mitchell, not Josiah and Milly Powell Box.  I found land records in Tippah Co. MS that established Kesiah Box Bright's relationship with Robert Box and Patsy Mitchell.
However, we were never able to discover definitive documentation of Verna's line....but I am convinced by the documentation we did discover that she was descended from Henry Box of Choctaw Co. MS who was the second son of a Henry Box who was the son of Robert Box, Sr. of Pendleton Co.  In the absence of definitive documentation, Verna did not post a narrative of her ancestry.
For the same absence of definitive documentation, Verna and I did not post a narrative that expressed our view of the family of Robert and Phillis Box.  I am still working on it.  Verna cut back on her Box research to concentrate on putting her sons through college.
With that in mind,  I am sending you the documentation that was provided to us by Juliet Wills.  I have been unable to find the post in which I remember she put the information.  What I am sending is the documentation she provided.  There are still many documents I have that I think traces the travel of Robert and Phillis Box from New Castle Co. Delaware in 1728 to about 1786 in Laurens Co. SC. with Phillis Box in court records with her sons Robert, John, Joseph and Henry involved in a what appears to be a disagreement relative to Robert Box, the elder, estate.
Most of this is contrary to the family of Robert Box of Laurens Co. SC by Ophelia Wade because she did not discover the key pieces of documentation.  However, Ophelia Wade and her cooperator's provided much documentation that works into the travels of Robert and Phillis.
(In writing this, I have discovered one of my major hang-ups is that I have been attempting to include ALL  of the "documentation" we have and the Virgina segment has no direct connection to Robert AND Phillis Box.  The wife and family of Robert Box of Virginia are not mentioned in the documentation...just that he signed his signature as did the Robert Box of New Castle Co. DE and the Robert Box of Laurens Co. SC.  That will alleviate part of the difficult connections.)
    Here is Juliet's discovery:
Note by Joe Fox: The first documentation of Robert Box and his wife, Phillis (to my knowledge) was in the records of Delaware (that were found by Juliet Wills) in May of 1728 when they bought 114 acres in Miln Creek Hundred of New Castle Co. Delaware on the north side of White Clay Creek. The deed of this transaction was witnessed by Joseph Hadly,  probable son of Simon Hadley of New Castle Co. DE.  The records show Robert Box was a blacksmith and he signed his name while Phillis made her mark. The witnessing of the deed by Joseph Hadley raises a question of the possible relationship of the Box family and Hadley/Lindley families. The Hadley family had connections with Col. James Patton as evidenced by deeds in Augusta Co. VA and Robert Box was in Augusta Co. VA in 1753 as a landowner and listed as a debtor of Col. James Patton after Patton's death in 1755. In addition, Catherine Lindley, a great granddaughter of Simon Hadley II married Abraham Box, a grandson of Robert and Phillis Box.

(From Juliet Wills 8/11/2009)
Note by Juliet Wills: Although Robert and Phillis Box had sold their land 13 Sept 1729, it appears by court action brought by the mortgage holders he had not paid the mortgage due 10 April 1730, so land was seized and sold at public auction. That explains the record noted in my previous email of "Robert Box of New Castle,DE" where Josiah Ramage had bought the land at public auction. My question in that email was whether Robert Box perhaps had died, where the court would sell land at public auction to pay off debts was answered due to the Judgement NOT referring to Box as having died.
Also in the following books Robert Box (nor ANY Box) was not listed as having died in Delaware: (1) Colonial Delaware Wills and Estates to 1800: An Index by Donald O. Virdin. Published by Heritage Books. (2) A Calendar of Delaware Wills, New Castle County 1682-1800 by the Historical Research Committee of the Colonial Dames of Delaware.
Why Verna Stone and I differ with Ophelia Wade and her cooperators:
There are two documentations Ophelia Wade and her cooperators did not discover that would have changed their interpretations: The deeds of Robert and Phillis Box of DE and the Lease/Release deeds of Robert Box (the elder) of Jackson Creek in 1769 are those two documents.
The Lease/release document Of Robert Box to Joseph Kershaw that  I have was obtained from the South Carolina Archives and because Jackson Creek is in what is now known as Fairfield Co. SC and the sale was administered by J. P. James Lindley (a grandson of Simon Hadley of Miln Creek Hundred DE and father of Catherine Lindley Box) and witnessed by Robert Box, Junr. and William Allison ...all three were living on Raburns Creek in Laurens Co., about 70 miles away, establishes a family relationship between a Robert Box (the father) who wrote his name on the deed and Robert Box, Junr. (the son) who made his mark "R".
After selling the land on Jackson Creek, Robert Box bought land on Reedy River in Laurens Co. closer to his sons, Robert, Joseph, John and Edward.  His son, Henry Box, apparently remained in Tennessee where they all lived during a part of the Revolutionary War.
Since Ophelia Wade did not know of Phillis Box, they missed the importance of her trespass charges against David Alexander:
Court of 16 March 1786 court minutes, p61: Phillis Box plt. vs David Alexander Deft. Trespass. This day came the Deft by Jacob Brown and James Yancey his Attorneys and the Plf Tho Solemnly Calld Came not nor is her Suit further Prosecuted. Therefore on Motion of the Deft. by his Attorneys aforesaid it is Considered by the Court, that the Deft recover against the said Plt five shillings Damages besides his Costs by him in this Behalf Expended according to an act of Assembly in that Case made and Provided. Clerks fees 8sh 5p; Sheriffs Fees 4sh 8p; Attorney's fees 1lb 1sh 9p total: 1lb 14sh 11p
Or the real significance Abraham Box's testimony:
1791-04-20 Abraham Box made an oath that about 6 years ago that he heard his Uncle Henry Box tell sd Depnt’s Father John Boxthat he gave to him the title of a certain tract of Land on Reedy River in Laurens Co., being then occupied by David Alexander. Given before Joseph Downs J.P. Laurens Co. [No record date.], p428.
I interpret the above two items to mean Robert Box, husband of Phillis Box was deceased by 1786.  John Box much later sold the land on Reedy River belonging to Robert Box, assumed to be his father.
IF the mark "R" is a valid trace for Robert Box, Junr. (b. abt 1734)it shows him as (1) the 1st member of the family in SC, the son-in-law of James Williams, who settled on Raburns Creek with William Allison and Edward Box (believed to be his brother), (2) as one of the Box family who moved to Nolichucky Settlement during the Revolutionary War and (3) as one who moved to Pendleton Co. SC after the war.  It is believed he was counted as Robert Box, Sr. in the 1790 Census of Pendleton Co. SC with his brother, Edward Box, and his son, Robert Box, Jr, who later became the Robert Box, Sr, of Franklin Co. TN and husband of Jane Goodwin.
Robert and Jane Goodwin had a son, Robert Box, who was probably counted in the 1830 census of Hardeman Co. TN as was Robert Box, son of Abraham Box.  They can be distinguished by their neighbors. Robert, son of Robert and Jane Goodwin Box, was a widower and neighbor of his brothers, John and Goodwin Box and was later buried in Hardeman Co. TN.  Robert, son of Abraham and Catherine Lindley Box, was neighbors of his brother, Lindley Box, and his son-in-law, Simeon Bright, and was later buried in Alcorn Co. MS.

That is the story in a nutshell!!  I have needed to do that for a long time.  Thanks for the stimulus.
    Joe

Short Histories of Five Michael Boxes

As a result of cooperative research of numerous Box genealogists, five Michael Boxes can be distinguished. These short histories are based on the documentation that has been found and are hopefully factual. However, since interpretation of the documentation may be flawed, there may be errors. These short histories are presented as works in progress. Corrections and/or additions are encouraged.

Michael Box, Sr., was born about 1755 and obviously moved south to Georgia. He married Mary Keys Bolton, daughter of Joseph Keys and widow of William Bolton, probably in North Carolina. This Mary may have been known as Mollie. Sarah Box was admin. for the estate of Wm Bolton in the Inferior Court of Orange County, NC (1777-1788). North Carolina acknowledged Michael Box for service in the Revolutionary War. It is probable, based on age, this was same Michael Box who received a land grant of 250 acres on Walnut Creek in 1784 in Laurens County South Carolina adjacent to the tract owned by Mrs. Box, believed to be the widow of Joseph Box. On July 17, 1787, Michael Box also received Grant No. 656 for 160 acres in Greene County, Tennessee, possibly a grant based on his military service. However, in the 1790 census of Laurens County, South Carolina, Michael Box was listed with 2 males over 16; 3 males 1-15; 9 females; 0 slaves. Michael Box was on the 1800 Tax List for Franklin County, Georgia and was listed in the 1805 Georgia lottery. Michael Box, Sr. and Michael Box, Jr. first appear on the Tax List of Franklin County, Georgia in 1807. They are listed again on the Tax List of Franklin County Georgia in 1819. There are records of land deeds involving Michael Box, Sr, and Michael Box, Jr. in Franklin County, Georgia from 1811 to 1820. Ophelia Wade wrote that Michael Box, Sr. died and was buried near Homer, Banks Co. GA in 1820. Gene Swann wrote in his book, "In 1820, Thomas Farmer Anderson bought a tract of land from the heirs of Michael Box." However, the 1830 Census of Franklin County, Georgia has a Michael Box, age 70 to 80, with a wife age 80 to 90.

Michael Box, Jr. was a son of Michael Box, Sr., and was probably born in Laurens County, SC. He appears on several land deeds with his father, Michael Box, Sr, in Franklin County, GA from 1811 to 1820. He was enumerated in the 1820 census of Habersham County, Georgia; he and his wife were 26-45 of age with 1 daughter over 10 and 4 boys under 10. According to Goodspeed in his "1888 History of Lawrence County " (MO) account covering the descendants of Michael Box, Jr., Michael Box, Jr. (born abt.1786-based on being age 21 on Georgia Tax Roll of 1807) moved from Georgia to McMinn County, Tennessee in 1829 and then on to Rhea County, TN where he died. Court records showing his wife Frances Box and John McCallen as Adm. and Admin of his estate indicate he died before Nov. 7, 1831.

Michael D. Box was born abt. 1818 in Georgia, and was listed in the1850 Person County, North Carolina, census He appears to be the son of Michael Box. Jr. There was also a Michael D. Box who received a land patent for 160 acres in Pullman County, Alabama in 1884. The connection is unknown.

Michael James Box, a grandson of Michael Box, Sr, was born about December 28, 1812 to Josiah and Millie Powell Box. The Caldwell family register indicates he died in January or February 1814.

Michael James Box, a grandson of Michael Box, Sr. was born about 1815 to Marmaduke and Nancy Powell Box. He is recorded as a member of the Masonic Lodge in Mississippi along with Josiah Box and Reuben F. Box . Michael J. Box married Mary A. Lawrence May 25 1837 in Lowndes County, Mississippi. There was a land patent issued for 80 acres in the names of Michael J. Box and John W. Rodgers in Lowndes County, Mississippi on December 10, 1844. In March of 1861, Michael James Box led a group of 300 persons known as the Box Colony, into Mexico in search of gold. The expedition met with disaster and some of the expedition returned to the United States. Michael James Box is reported to have remained in Mexico. He was the apparent author of a book entitled “Capt. James Box’s Adventures in New and Old Mexico” published in 1869 and claimed to have been a Texas Ranger.

Michael Box, born about 1780, moved from Laurens County SC to Knox County, TN where his sons, James Francis Box, William and Thomas were born. Wade in The Box Book indicates Michael Box was performing marriages in Knox County TN in 1809. By 1810, he was on the tax rolls of Madison County, Mississippi Territory (which became Madison County, Alabama) and his sons, John Box and Grief Johnson Box and his daughters Mary Box and Lydia Box were born in Alabama. In 1812, he was a private in the 16th Regt. of Mississippi Territory militia. In the 1815-1817 census of Mississippi Territory he was listed as Michael Box, 1 male over 21; 4 males under 21; 1 female over 21 and 2 females under 21; along with a Benjamin Box. On Feb. 28, 1818, Michael Box, his wife, Mary, and Mary Hellums, were received into membership of Bethel Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa County, AL. In the Census of 1830, Fayette County, AL, Michael Box, age 50 to 60, is listed along with his sons , William and John. On August 2, 1838, Michael, William, and John Box made application for Land Patents on Quarter Sections of land in Tippah County, Mississippi. The Certificate Numbers were 961 for Michael Box and 962 for William Box and both were for land that had been previously assigned to Joseph Warren Mathews. On November 16,1840, Lewis Garret and Thomas Box obtained a Land Patent for Quarter Section that was located in the area that became Benton County, MS. On November 28, 1843, Grief Johnson Box obtained a Land Patent for a Quarter Section. The 1840 Census of Tippah County, MS lists Michael Box, his sons Thomas, Grief J., and John and Elizabeth “Elspeth” Box, Michael’s daughter-in-law and widow of William Box. This Michael Box died intestate in 1841 and his wife, Mary, shortly after. His son, Grief J. Box, as administrator of Michael Box’s estate was sued by Lydia McCollum, as a daughter of Michael Box. The value of Michael Box’s estate at the time of his death was appraised at nearly two thousand dollars with debts totaling less than thirty five dollars. Known children of Michael Box and his wife, Mary Fulcher Box: James Frances Box, William M. Box, Thomas Box, Mary Box Henderson, Lydia Box McCollum, John Box and Grief Johnson Box. Thomas Box became a member of the LDS Church in Texas in 1856 and provided family information to the church that indicated his father, Michael Box, was the son of James and Mary Box. Thomas also stated he was a grand-nephew of Stephen F. Box and 2nd cousin to Rolan Box (son of John Morris Box). That would make his grandfather, James Box, a brother to Stephen F. Box and John Morris Box. Upon James Box’s apparent death, his widow Mary Box, had married William Hellums, and was mother to Michael Box’s half brother, John Hellums and half sisters, Mary Hellums and Anna Hellums.

      • Wayne, found Joseph Box in Christian County, Kentucky Tax Records and also here is something I found about Isaac Parker in Ancestry.com, very interesting. Isaac Parker served as Lt. in the Kentucky Militia in 1801. Captain of the Regiment was his brother-in-law John Jones. Isaac and Nancy and their family left Kentucky around 1806 for Tennessee. The family resided in Lincoln County. (1800-16). Later, members moved to Alabama then to Hardeman County, Tennessee and then to Bibb County, Alabama. in the 1830's many in the family headed west and settled in Leake County, Mississippi.

After Their marriage, the family lived near the Greenville-Laurens County, border. They lived near Little Horse Creek, a branch of the Reedy River and very near Nancy Jones Parker's sister, Mary Jones Story, wife of John Story.

About 1796-7 Nancy Jones and Isaac Parker and family moved from South Carolina to western Kentucky where they first settled in Christian County, Kentucky. Many families moved to western Kentucky at the same time, securing land grants averaging 200 acres or more. Among these were Nancy Jones Parker's sister, Mary Jones Story and her brothers, John Jones, Jesse Jones, and Samuel Jones. Her mother, Lydia Jones Fowler, and stepfather, Richard Fowler, Jr., as well as half-brother and sisters, moved also, but settled near Nashville In Davidson County, Tennessee.

        Notes for Nancy Jones:

Moved with family members to Christian County, Kentucky (1797). The area became Livingston County in 1799 and Caldwell County in 1809..

Note: Thanks to Randall T Jones, gggg grandson of John Jones who was the Captain of the Regiment of the Kentucky Militia in 1801. Mr. Jones shared his treasure of knowledge of the early Parker family with Harold Gene Parker of Mena, Arkansas who then shared it with his cousin Frances Ann Parker.

Here is my information. Isaac Parker not in 1797, 1798 Chrstian County, Kentucky Tax Records. Isaac Parker in Christain County, Kentucky 1799 Tax Record, Isaac Parker in 1800 Livingston County, Kentucky Tax Record. Isaac Parker in 1801 Livingston County, Kentucky Tax Record. Robert Parker, Benjamin Parker and Jesse Parker start showing up in the Livingston County, Kentucky Tax Records 1802, 1803, 1804. Do not show up in 1805, part of record may be missing. Robert Parker, Benjamin Parker, Jesse Parker and William Parker show up in Livingston County, Kentucky Tax Record in 1806. Robert Parker, Benjamin Parker, and William Parker show up in the Livingston County, Kentucky 1807 Tax Record. Jesse Parker not listed in 1807 and William Parker not listed till 1806.
These are the Skin Frame, Livingston water course Parkers and not the Eddy Creek water course Parkers. Robert Parker, Isaac Parker and John Story all next to one another in the 1790 Greenville, South Carolina Federal Census. Also found Harold Gene Parker and his father in Alfred Parker in the 1930 Census and FamilySearch.org. Alfred father was Mathew Parker. Have more information but that is it for now. Thank you everyone for all your time and knowledge. God bless everyone.
        • Steven,
Thanks for the update. It sure looks we have broken down the brick wall on Robert Parker family.
Sadly both Harold Gene Parker and Frances Ann Parker have passed on, based on information from Find A Grave.
          Wayne
