I'm seeking the parents of Matthew E Parker (1812-1885) who married Charity B. __?__. Matthew is my gg grandfather. He was born in SC and according to the census his father was born in NC and his mother in SC. Although his name is on a list of mail held in the "dead letter" office in Athens, GA in 1839, I first find him already in GA as the head of a household in Gwinnette Co. in 1840, then on the 1845 state census for Forsyth Co. and the 1850-1880 in Gordon Co., GA. I have never been able to find Charity's maiden name or her parents either. I've been searching for this info. for many years. I'd love to hear for anyone else working on this line or get some suggestions about what to do next.

I am looking for information on the following:

I have found Matthew E Parker & his wife Charity B on the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census for Gordon County. Matthew came from South Carolina. Who were his parents? Did he have any brothers or sisters? Where in South Carolina did he come from. Charity was born in Georgia. Most of the family seems to have been buried at Bethesda Baptist Church, Blackwood Baptist church and Mt Carmel Christian Church in Decatur...

Matthew E. Parker b. abt. 1812 m. Charity b. abt 1812 abt. 1836 possibly in Gwinnett County. Can't find any marriage record for them.

      They had ten children:

Mary W. Parker b. abt 1837. apparently never married.

Thomas D. Parker b. abt. 1839. served in Co. D 1st GA Calvary. Prisoner of war at Fairmount. Fate unknown.

Julius E. Parker b. abt. 1841. Married Susan E. Mahan on 20 Sep. 1866 in Cherokee Co. GA. they had 6 children (Fannie, Ena, Clara, Rebecca, James L and Julius C)

William M Parker b 23 Jan 1844. d. 1 May 1914. Married Mary Elizabeth Barton 5 Nov 1868 in Gordon Co. Buried at Bethesda Baptist Church. 10 known children (Charity C, Thomas Lee, John F, Catherine Louise, Ida Estelle, Mary Abbie, Ollie, William Luther, Robert Lee, Dennis Murphey)

Martha C parker b. abt. 1847 in GA married to L.M. Knight 3 may 1885.

Harriet Adeline b. about 1849.married william K Stewart 25 Sept 1873.Living next door to Matthew on 1880 Gordon County census.

Henry Taylor Parker (my gggrandfather) b. jan. 1852 d. 12 July 1924. Married Mary Emma Maret. Both buried at Bethesda Baptist Church. They had 10 children (Mattie Lee Grant (stepdaughter), Joeberry Harlston, Edmond McCoy, Henry Lee, Lewis Burl, Clinton Clemons, Samuel Taylor (my ggrandfather), Mary Lucindie, Dona May, Amanda Mariah)

Any info on any of the following would be much appreciated!

I've been able to find the Parkers on the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census in Gordon County...

But I don't have any marriage record for Matthew E. Parker & Charity B ?. Could have been married in Gwinnett county but aren't sure of that.

Matthew was born in S. Carolina around 1812 and Charity was born in Georgia around the same year.

We have no idea where either of them are buried. Other family memebers are buried at Blackwood Baptist Church and Bethesda Baptist Church.

Matthew & Charity had 10 children: Mary W, thomas D, Julius E, Lewis, William M, Charity E., Martha C, Harriet Adeline, Henry Taylor (my gg grandfather)and Ellen Emiline.

Other surnames in the line are Legg, Maret, Mooney, Isbell, Wilbanks, Adams, Isbell, Thayer, Holbrook. Fletcher,Wheeler, Squire.

any help would be greatly appreciated. Matthew E. is my proverbial brick wall!

You can email me at shart@niteshift.com. Thanks in advance for any possible help!

I have hit the perverbial brick wall on Matthew E. Parker and his wife Charity B.???. I can't find anything on him before 1812. Where in S. Carolina did the Parker family come from? They settled mainly in the Gordon Co GA area. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'm willing to share any data I have that would be beneficial to anyone else. Other surnames I have are LEGG, MARET, WILBANKS, MOONEY, ISBELL, STAPP, KEES, HOLBROOK, THAYER and ADAMS.

There is also some Indian ancestry I would like to find out about as well. My gggrandmother was Casiar (casiah??) Marinda Mooney. Her mothers name was Venie Mooney, b. abt. 1817 in S.C., d. abt. 1860-70 who was married to an Indian. Venie Mooney's parents were James Mooney b. abt. 1790 in S. Carolina and Lucy ? b. abt 1786 in S. Carolina. Apparently, the Cherokee tradition is that the children take the mothers name.

Matthew E. Parker b. abt. 1812 in South Carolina, married to Charity B ? around 1836, possible in Gwinnet County, GA. They had 10 known children:

        Mary A b. abt. 1880, never married ?

Thomas D. b. abt. 1839 served in Co. D, 1st GA Cavalry C.S.A. Taken as prisoner of war. Fate unknown.

Julius E b. about 1841. Enlisted in Co. I, 23rd GA Infantry C.S.A. married Susan Mahan 1866 in Cherokee Co. They had 6 kids.

Lewis W. Parker b. abt. 1842. Enlisted in Co. I, 23rd GA Infantry. Never married.

William M. Parker b. abt. 1844. Married Mary Elizabeth Barton in 1868. Enlisted in Sweetwater Tenn. on 11 July 1863 in Co. F 1st GA Cavalry. Prisoner or war at Rock Island Prison. They had 10 known children.

        Charity Elizabeth b. abt. 1845 m. Daniel C. Jackson

        Martha C. b. abt. 1847 M. L.M. Knight

        Harriet Adeline b. abt. 1849 m. William K. Stewart

Henry Taylor Parker b. jan 1852 married Emma Maret (Merit??)(1st husband - Grant). They also had 10 children.

Ellen Emiline Parker b. abt. 1853 m. Joseph Hood

I would like to find out who Matthews' parents were so that I could trace back the ancestry of the Parker line. Hit a big time road block here. There are so many names I've seen on this site that could be possible ancestors, but not sure. So many of the names are the same names in my line and back then, it was standard practice to carry the names down the line.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated and I am willing to share any information I might have that would be of some help to anyone else.

Looking for info on the following Parkers:

MARY W. b. abt. 1837 in GA apparently never married.

THOMAS D. b. abt. 1839 in GA maried Mary ? abt. 1859. Private in Co. D, 1st GA Cavalry. Prisoner of war at Fairmount GA Fate unknown.

        Hello fellow Parkers,

I have posted some photos of my ancestors, please feel free to view. My brick wall has been my paternal 4th great grandfather Mr. William Parker b. 1774 in South Carolina d. in 1856 in most likely Gordon County, Georgia as it was his last known residence. William it appears arrived in York County, SC around the same time as one John Parker as they both were granted land on the Broad River by different parties in 1796. To my knowledge William's first child was female by the name of Mariah. Mariah was born in 1804. At this time we assume William is already married to Edith Lindsey, the daughter of Isaac Lindsey, but it is not until 1812 that Isaac grants a parcel of land that moves him from Broad River to Belle's Branch in SC. William's son Jasper Newton states during a Guion Miller interview that he is the last living of 13 children. The following are all we have documentation to confirm that they are indeed: WILLIAM PARKER and EDITH LINDSEY are:

        i. MARIAH PARKER, b. 1804; m. LUKES. D. 1878

        ii. WILLIAM2 PARKER, b. 1805; d. 1883.

        ? possible child Mary Parker b. 1806

iii. JULIAN PARKER, b. 1810, South Carolina, United States; d. 1886, Georgia, United States.

        ? possible child: Matthew E Parker b. 1812
        ? possible child: Caroline b. 1818

        iv. NANCY EMILINE PARKER, b. 1822. D. 1903

        v. JOHN LINDSEY or (Lewis) PARKER, b. 1822. d.1887

vi. JASPER PARKER, b. 22.Aug. 1829 d. unknown in TN.

        vii. POLLY PARKER, b. 1834; d. 1902.

As you can see this by no means totals the 13 children. I have added for you to view the 3 additional possible children. These I am simply putting in as they seem to have distanced themselves in close proximity of William Parker during his lifetime.

William Parker has from time to time been described in his vocation as a "shoemaker".

There is a William Parker who is buried in Martin Cemetery on the NC/SC line who died in 1856, but this would take his body across the state for burial. I am just not sure about this.
Edith had passed 3 years prior in 1853. To this date I have not located graves for either.

Another thing I wonder is was William married prior to Edith Lindsey and were there children of that marriage. Based on the birth of their first stated child below William would have married Edith prior to her 19th year and he would have been 30 years old and that just seems a tad bit late in life for a first marriage. Could he be the William Parker who was married to Christina Matthews who passed in sometime around 1817? Did he divorce his previous wife or she him? I have lots of questions and would appreciate any answers you might have.

                    • Find A Grave Index for Harriet Adeline Parker and Henry Taylor Parker. Harriet A Parker applied for financial assistance as a Cherokee Indian. Henry Taylor Parker mother Charity Browning Parker. Charity B in the Federal Census. Do not think Henry Taylor Parker applied for assistance as a Cherokee Indian or any other of their siblings. Aaron Parker married Margaret Browning. Aaron Parker and Margaret Browning had a son Joshua Browning Parker. There are other Parkers with middle names of Browning. Is there a connection with Browning and Parker of this family. Wondering if Mary Parker in the 1840 Gwinnett County, Georgia Federal Census is the mother of Mathew and/or Daniel Parker. All three on the same page. Mary has 2 other younger people on the Census, may be her children.
