PARKER GENEALOGY CONFUSION IN THE USA

I am researching the family of Nathaniel Parker, b. 1730 & m to Ann Clayton. Sarah Parker, whom I believe to be the granddaughter of Nath. & Ann, married Thomas Slay, Jr., son of Thomas Slay, Sr. & Frances Ricketts.I would apprciate any help on the ancesteral genealogy from Sarah on back to Eng. It is my belief that this line goes back to Cornwall, but cannot prove it. I would like any proof that I can get of this connection, or anything that disproved it.

Hi, Wayne - You and I have hashed these points out many times before, but since you post parts of them again, let's give it another try:

    From your post:
Nathaniel Parker and his wife Ann Clayton
    1--------9
---> 10. Robert Parker born 1754 Gates Cty., NC.; died 1825 Copiah Cty., MS.; married 1769 Prisilla Riddick in Gates Cty., NC. ( LINKS TO: births, marriages, death, Will, burial )
About item #10 above, that Robert Parker Sr. died in Gates Co. Both he andr his son Robert Parker Jr. died in Gates Co. NC, the elder in 1797 and the younger decades later, ca. 1823. The other Robert Parker was in Copiah or Hines until his death after the 1820 Census and before the 1830 census. When Copiah Robert's elder wife died is unknown, but it probably was also in Copiah.

Whether or not Copiah Robert Parker was actually in FG#5 or FG#7 does not hold great interest for me, mainly because events in our Benjamin's life imply that he was not particularly interested in the old man Robert either. They showed up over time in the same clan, even in the same neighborhoods, but Benjamin kept moving away, so evidently he felt little responsibility for the old man.

You also continue to postulate that Robert Parker Sr. who died 1797 was part of FG#7. That certainly could be true, but based upon wills etc., he must have been a lineal ancestor of some ofher later descendant than our Benjamin Parker, the one who married Nancy Anderson. Robert Parker Sr.'s will did not list a son named Benjamin either alive or previously deceased ca. 1797. I remain confident about the paper trail and thus the YDNA match in our records between our P11 and Benjamin, but I still am unable to make the leap from Benjamin to the Robert Parker Sr. who d. 1797 I am certainly open to such a leap, but can you help me do that?

    Patricia Ross Parker
    • Hi. Patricia,
I have made the changes you requested to my file.

    • Hello Patricia,

I do not expect everyone to agree will my research and yes I do deal in theories and will continue to do so. A theory is just that no more no less. A theory must either be proven or disproved. If it is proven then it become fact , if the theory is found to be wrong then I know that I need to research elsewhere. As part of my research of lately I have been looking at all of our old posts on different forums and you know what I found. We all have used the theory method all a long but it wasn’t labeled a theory.
I may be wrong, it would not be the first time nor do I expect it will the last time. I do not expect to please ever other researcher not do I even try anymore. I do however hold my respect for other Genealogy Researchers very high and I value their input very much but in the end my research must come from my heart.
Although my main Parker research is on y-DNA FG#7 I have an ongoing interest in all Parker research as I have found that although I am not related to other Parker y-DNA groups by blood I am connected by marriage and I also have many Parker families in my file that I have no idea where they fit in.

I have included a small amount of information about the two different Robert Parker below.

      Notes for ROBERT PARKER:
Note Theory only: 1-21-2015 I am going out on a limb and say that the Robert Parker that is listed the 1790 census of Greenville Co., SC on page 113 is the father of Isaac and also the father of Benjamin Parker (P11) Jesse Parker (P 120 and 296) and William Parker. I also believe that Robert is the son of Daniel and Mary (Sumner) Parker and the grandson of Richard Parker III. My theory only at this time.I could be wrong or right only time and more research will tell. Wayne N. Parker P239

  • Hello, Joe Crouch -

    Thanks for your response.

As I re-read my comments to you, I realize I did not make it clear that I do not consider myself one of those FG#18 researchers who deserves to or even needs to agree on the identity of the mother of Nathaniel Parker's children. As a PH moderator and researcher, I try to touch as many YDNA Family Groups bases as possible, mainly to help other members when I can, and I do love the back stories on all of these people. And like you, I am interested in having correct Parker data in our online archives.

Otherwise, my family interests start with FG#7 and the others in YDNA male R1b haplos and their ancient common ancestors. I do thank you heartily for the large amount of meaningful data you share.

On another question, please understand, I do not ask the following to re-open the debate about Ann Clayton. But, do you know anything about how or why Nathaniel Parker's first born John -- son also of what's her name :) -- supposedly left Hampshire Virginia and moved to live in Gloucester, King and Queen County on the lower Chesapeake? Again, supposedly, his mother's people came from there, she had inherited assets there. Please don't ask me where those 'supposes' came from, too long ago. It is unclear whether John married his wife (name I also don't remember) in Hampshire then took her to the coast with him, or if he met/married her in K&Q. In the considerable data you have, do you have anything on those decades of John's life before he apparently went to Sumner Co. to collect his inheritance, liquidate it, and live out his years in Kentucky?

    Glad to exchange with you.

Patricia Ross Parker, Ed.D., Parker Heritage moderator and researcher for P11 of YDNA Family Group #7
    • Supposes aka conjectures are good and get one to look at other possibilities

In the 1782 Hampshire County, VA (now Mineral County, W.V.) tax lists you can find two Nathaniel Parkers. One listed as senior with 3 people in the household and the other just as Nathaniel Parker with 10 people in the household. Some researchers have said Nathaniel Parker senior was the father of the just Nathaniel Parker without any proof. One has to keep in mind that before modern identification cards two people with the same name might be identified in tax / census records as senior or junior or location just to differentiate between two even though there was no family relationship.

John Parker (1755-1801) & Mary (Harper and Rogers or just Harper ?)
      01 - Phoebe PARKER b: 4 Jun 1774
      02 - Gouldman PARKER (30 Nov 1775-19 May 1826)
      03 - Katy PARKER b: 29 Oct 1777
      04 - John PARKER (23 Feb 1780 - Aft 1850 AR)
      05 - Sally PARKER b: 7 Dec 1781
      06 - Elizabeth PARKER b: 22 Dec 1783
      07 - Thomas PARKER b: 13 Jan 1786
      08 - Elijah PARKER b: 23 Jan 1788
      09 - Polly PARKER b: 4 Jan 1790
      10 - Nancy PARKER b: 19 Feb 1792
      11 - Susannah PARKER b: 1794
      12 - Rebekah PARKER b: 12 Mar 1796
      13 - Lucy PARKER b: 30 Jun 1798
      14 - Nathan PARKER b: 15 Feb 1801

While the above children of John Parker and his wife Mary and the below children of John and Sally (Collier) Parker run in chronological sequence there is the issue of the Hampshire County, VA. tax lists. (http://www.genealytreemaker.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/par... ) You find John Parker(s) in the 1782, 1783, 1784, 1785, 1787, 1788, 1790 (John Sr., John son of Nathaniel & Jo’n), 1791 (just John), 1792 (John PT, TN), 1793 (John .notation Small, John NR), 1794 (John & John), 1795 (John N.Creek & John)

Note in the 1790, & 1791 Hampshire County, VA tax lists where ‘John son of Nathaniel Parker’ is listed and the 1792 Hampshire County, VA tax list where it notes ‘John PT, TN’ and the person who transcribed the record inserted -probably son of Nathaniel Parker who went to Sumner County, TN. Son of Nathaniel suggests that Nathaniel Parker (1724-1811) son John who would have turned 21 shortly before the 1790 census (a comparison of the 1810 and 1830 Shelby County, KY. census shows him born between 1765 and 1770) was not the same John Parker living in King & Queen County, VA based upon the births of his children.
John Parker (1765-1833) and Sarah Collier
      01 - Susan Bealer Parker 9 September 1802
02 - Aaron Parker male born about 1805
      03 - Lucretia Parker born 1808
      04 - Amanda F. Parker born 5 September 1809
      05 - John Parker, Jr. born 1810
      06 - Cresap Parker 10 June 1812
      07 - Mary 'Polly' Parker born abt.1813
      08 - Eldrige Parker abt. 1813
      09 - Benedict Parker abt. 1814
      10 - Sarah 'Sally' Parker 1818

As to wives, the family files I accessed for the John Parker of King & Queen show him being married to a Mary Harper and Mary Rogers. Whether one or both are correct is the question. Oral tradition from the 1904 Parker In America letters (page 481 & 482) and repeated in Jay Guy Cisco’s 1909 book Historic Sumner County, TN. state: Nathan PARKER had seven sons. The three eldest, John, Thomas, and Richard, married sisters, Misses ROGERS, members of the same family as General George Rogers CLARK. Does oral tradition govern?

It’s possible that succeeding generations confused the two Nathaniel Parkers and it was John , the son of Nathaniel Parker, SR. in the 1782 tax list was the one who moved to King & Queen County, VA. and married Mary Rogers. It’s more likely that with two Nathaniel Parkers in Hampshire County, VA. have been confused over the years similar to the Nathaniel and Ann (Clayton) Parker and the Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Scott) Parker. And it was John Parker son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Scott) Parker who married Mary Rogers, she died, then he married Sally Collier.

The earliest Shelby County, KY. record for John Parker and his brother-in-law Michael Collier is an 18 Jan 1804 land indenture where he purchased from Geo. Coleman. The Shelby County, KY. John Parker is in the 1810, 1820, and 1830 Shelby County, KY. U.S. census records and then a Bill of Property was submitted to the Shelby County, KY. court in June 1822 for John Parker dcd.

As I stated earlier the DAR states the John Parker of King & Queen County, VA died in 1801. That would have been the same year his last child of record was born. The 1790, 1791 & 1792 Hampshire County, Va tax lists seems to reinforce that John Parker, the son of Nathaniel (1724-1811) was a separate, distinct individual from the King & Queen County, VA John Parker.
      • An update to this paragraph of my comment on 'Parker Genealogy Confusion in the U.S.A':
"As to wives, the family files I accessed for the John Parker of King & Queen show him being married to a Mary Harper and Mary Rogers. Whether one or both are correct is the question. Oral tradition from the 1904 Parker In America letters (page 481 & 482) and repeated in Jay Guy Cisco’s 1909 book Historic Sumner County, TN. state: Nathan PARKER had seven sons. A December 1793 will of Thomas Gouldman of Essex Co., VA. (adjacent to King and Queen County, VA) leaves a bequest to his daughter Mary (Gouldman) Parker and his sonl-in-law John Parker of King and Queen Co., VA. Further down was a bequest to his daughter Sarah (Sally) Parker and her husband William Parker. John Parker 1755-1816 and his brother William Parker 1766-1818 were sons of Robert Parker 1732-1792 and his wife Sarah of Essex Co., VA who tie into Parker yDNA FamilyGroup #15.

Mary Rogers as the wife of John Parker 1755-1816 has been disproved, which reinforces Jay Guy Cisco's 1909 Parker text in his book Historic Sumner County, TN' that three eldest sons (John, Thomas & Richard) of Nathaniel Parker 1724-1811 who died in Sumner Co., TN. married three Rogers sisters (Mary, Susannah and Nancy), daughters of William Rogers and Sarah his wife of Hampshire Co. VA.

Nathaniel Parker 1724-1811's son John Parker died in 1832 Shelby Co., KY which is where he and his sister Elizabeth Parker (married Michael Collier migrated to before 1804. By the time they moved there Mary Rogers was deceased and John Parker 1765-1832 married Elizabeth Collier, a sister of Michael Collier's and grandchildren of Col Thomas Cresap ( see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Cresap )
        Thomas Cresap
Colonel Thomas Cresap (c.1702—c.1790) was an English-born settler and trader in the states of Maryland and Pennsylvania. Cresap served Lord Baltimore…
  • Mellissa, I am sorry but the information I have on Nathaniel +Ann Clayton is only what I have previously posted. I wihs I had more proof on his line.

I do have some lineage of Nathaniel's son Robert Parker who married Priscilla Riddick in 1769 if that is of interest to anyone.
    • Jim,
I know this post is from last year, but I found it of interest. Would you have information on Robert and Priscilla's children? I am hoping that my g-g-g-grandfather Jesse (b. 1775?) is one of their offspring.

  • I have never seen any document that proves Elder John Parker's (born 1758) parents.

The article has a statement that Nathaniel Parker (1724-1811) moved to TN and that four of his sons did also but that John Parker did not move to TN. Nathaniel Parker Jr was born in 1761.

Elder John Parker moved to TN. He moved from Elbert County GA in 1804 by authority of the Georgia Govenor's passport to Hickman Co TN and he settled in Sumner Co TN. See his Revolutionary War Service Pension Application.

I have not checked the Parker DNA Project to see if any proven descendant of Nathaniel Parker has taken the test and where his line matches.
